Apprenticeship Information - Welder

Welder means a person who:

  • Welds pipe to TSSA Standards. 

  • Is able to weld with various processes (SMAW) (GTAW) for x-ray quality welds.

  • Can cut a variety of materials using an oxy-fuel or plasma torch.

Educational Requirements

  • Grade 12 diploma 

Apprenticeship

  • Apprenticeship is a Training Agreement between you, the employer and the government.

Hours of Apprenticeship

  • The agreement is for: 3 periods of 1,800 hours = 5,400 hours maximum.

Trade School

  • You will be required to attend Trade School at the Union Hall 3 times over the 3 year period of your apprenticeship.

Night School

  • If  you are a member of Local 67, you will be required by the JATC to take Night School of 60 hours per year (20 nights @ 3 hours per night = 60 hours) minimum.

Journeyperson's Certificate

  • Only after successfully completing the 5,400 hours, the terms of Trade School and pass the final exam, will you then receive your Certificate of Qualification.

Wages

Wages are based on a percentage of the Journeyperson's base rate:

  • 1st year - 50%

  • 2nd year - 60%

  • 3rd year - 70%

Apprenticeship Information - Steamfitter

Steamfitter means a person who:

  • Lays out, assembles, installs, maintains or repairs heating systems, cooling systems, process systems or industrial systems. 

  • Installs the piping for any process.

  • Reads and understands design drawings, manufacturers' illustrations and installation diagrams for piping and appliances connected there to.

Educational Requirements

  • Math, English and Science at a grade 11 level. 

Apprenticeship

  • Apprenticeship is a Training Agreement between you, the employer and the government.

Hours of Apprenticeship

  • The agreement is for: 5 periods of 1,800 hours = 9,000 hours maximum. This could be reduced if you have education and/or work experience related to the trade.

Trade School

  • You will be required to attend Trade School at a community college 3 times for 8 weeks each time, over the five years of your apprenticeship.

Night School

  • If  you are a member of Local 67, you will be required by the JATC to take Night School of 60 hours per year (20 nights @ 3 hours per night = 60 hours) minimum.

Journeyperson's Certificate

  • Only after successfully completing the 9,000 hours, the terms of Trade School and pass the final exam, will you then receive your Certificate of Qualification as either a Plumber or Steamfitter.

Apprenticeship Information - Plumber

Plumber means a person who:

  • Lays out, assembles, installs, maintains or repairs any piping, fixtures appliance and apparatuses for supply and disposal of water that has been used for any domestic or industrial purpose. 

  • Installs the piping for any process.

  • Reads and understands design drawings, manufacturers' illustrations and installation diagrams for piping and appliances connected there to.

  • Math, English and Science at a grade 11 level.
